Adoption > Frequently Asked Questions
- What are your business hours?
KRA does not have regularly scheduled hours since we are staffed solely by volunteers. Visits to the shelter are by appointment only and are pre-arranged. Please contact us through email or phone and we will gladly arrange a mutually convenient time for you to visit our cats.
- If I find a cat I want to adopt, can I take him/her home that day?
Unfortunately, no. There is an adoption process which includes an application form which must be completed as well as veterinary references which must be checked prior to your being accepted as an adopter. We also need time to prepare the cats for transfer to their new homes.
- What if my new cat doesn't adjust to my home?
Any cat adopted from KRA can be returned to us at any time, for any reason but we generally recommend that you give your new cat at least a two month adjustment period before you make this decision. Shelter volunteers often have good tips to facilitate the transition into a new home and we encourage new owners to contact us if your new cat is having a difficult time adjusting.
- Can I adopt more than one cat?
Absolutely! In fact, we often suggest that you consider adopting two of our cats if there are no other cats in your current household. Kittens must be adopted in pairs unless they will have another feline companion at their new home.
- Will I have to take my new cat to the veterinarian?
We strongly encourage new owners to schedule a veterinary appointment with 10-14 days of adoption. Kittens older than 12 weeks of age and all adult cats will have received their rabies vaccine and will be up to date on their distemper vaccinations; all adult cats will have been spayed or neutered.
- Why can't I declaw my KRA cat?
KRA feels this is an unnecessarily cruel procedure and would be happy to discuss this issue as well as share documentation supporting our position.
